Citizen Eco-Drive: 50 Years of Light-Powered Innovation
The Citizen Eco-Drive is a revolutionary watch technology that has been powering timepieces for over half a century. It all began in the 1970s when the world was in search of new energy sources, and the development of alternative energy became a global priority. This prompted Citizen to explore ways to extend battery life and minimize waste in the world of watchmaking.
In 1976, Citizen introduced the world's first analog light-driven watch, the Citizen Crystron Solar Cell. This groundbreaking invention was a significant leap forward in watch technology, as it could be powered by both sunlight and artificial light. However, the technology had its challenges, including the lack of compact rechargeable batteries and the issue of hydrogen gas generation during charging.
Over the years, Citizen has continuously innovated and improved its Eco-Drive technology. The Crystron set the bar with its eight monocrystalline silicon solar cells and silver oxide battery, offering up to five years of continuous operation on a full charge. This extended the battery life significantly and reduced the need for frequent replacements.
In 1986, Citizen introduced amorphous silicon solar cells and large-capacity electric double-layer capacitors, which improved power generation efficiency and introduced a proper power reserve element. This allowed the watch to operate for approximately 200 hours on a full charge, a significant improvement over the original Crystron.
Citizen made another massive leap in 1995, achieving a power reserve of six months, and in 2000, they launched the Eco-Drive Radio-Controlled watch, which extended the service interval to 10 years. This watch was capable of keeping perfect time while connected to its radio signal and accurate within 20 seconds per month, far surpassing mechanical chronometers.
The brand's commitment to innovation continued, and by 2011, Citizen introduced the calibre A010, which boasted an astonishing accuracy of plus or minus five seconds annually. This movement is typically found in higher-end collections like the THE CITIZEN range.
In 2023, Citizen unveiled the Eco-Drive 365, which offers an incredible autonomy of one year of continuous operation on a full charge. This technology is showcased in the Promaster Dive E365, a saturation diver's watch with a helium escape valve and 300 meters of water resistance.
Citizen has also made significant strides in aesthetic innovations. The Eco-Drive Eclisse and calibre F810 introduced the Ring Solar technology, a flexible solar cell strip that absorbs light at the periphery of the dial, eliminating the need for a translucent dial. This innovation opened up new possibilities for dial design and layout.
In 2016, Citizen created a movement just 1mm thick, housed in the Citizen Eco-Drive One watch, which offers a 1-year autonomy and accuracy within 15 seconds per month. This ultra-thin movement showcases Citizen's mastery of watchmaking.
Today, Citizen offers a wide range of Eco-Drive watches, including the limited edition ATTESA Light in Black Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition F950 Timepiece, the Promaster Dive E365, and the THE CITIZEN Eco-Drive limited editions with zaratsu-finished Super Titanium cases and mesmerizing washi paper dials.
